Keep moving. It’s been said by everyone from the Dalai Lama to Michelle Obama yet for seniors, it can still be hard to get going. If you’re feeling like you don’t have the motivation to get moving you have to understand that motivation isn’t going to fall right into your lap. Motivation is often something that you have to make yourself, making the choice to get moving will start to follow with the motivation you’re hoping for, But it all starts with the choice to get up and get moving. Here are some ways to get moving and get the motivation flowing.
Lace-up your Walking Shoes
Put on your walking shoes and step outside. Sometimes it’s a matter of telling yourself to walk for just five minutes, and then once you’re out there walking you start feeling good, and you add on another five minutes. This can continue until you’ve walked for thirty minutes or so, meanwhile, you’ve had no motivation to walk five minutes but you did it anyway. Now we want to be clear, if you’re in any kind of pain or have difficulty breathing please get help – this is not the time to be moving.
Practice Safe Sun
Enjoy the sun safely, spending time outside can be great for motivation. Make sure you dress appropriately and use sunscreen, lightweight long sleeve shirts, and a sun hat. Everyone can agree that it’s easier to move when you feel good, and being outside, especially after a long winter gives you that feel-good feeling you need to get motivated. When you get yourself outside you might notice the garden needs a little weeding and a second later you’ve got your hands in the dirt! Motivation at its finest.
Stay Motivated and Accountable
Picking an activity you actually like will help you stay motivated, and joining in an activity as a group can help hold you accountable. Any activity is better when you can enjoy it with good company, get some friends involved and get moving together. Try out different activities until you find one you like, some examples could be yoga or dancing.
Eating a lighter diet in the summer months can help you stay moving and keep you feeling motivated. Heavy winter meals will slow you down. We recommend eating seasonal fruits and vegetables and drinking a lot of water. It’s especially easy for seniors to get dehydrated, so keeping track of your water intake might be necessary to make sure you’re staying hydrated.
